Mistral 10

$1,000.00

acrylic on birch panel in stained MDF
20 x 20 x 1 in.

Mistral 10 uses various brush techniques but prominently features blown acrylic. Splotches of different sizes and shapes result from varying the paint viscosity. It is the first tondo in the series and achieves visual and physical depth by building up a multitude of layers alternating between thick, transparent isolation coats and paint. A circular frame of forest green stained MDF completes the piece. Influences include Boucher, Fragonard and plastic sculptures by Brent Hayden.

The waters of Ladys Cove in Marblehead, Massachusetts inspire the series and draw visual reference from the cold ocean waters at low tide. One representational element hides amongst the abstract starbursts, a single tiny lady crab (Ovalipes ocellatus) smaller than the nail on a pinky finger. The paintings explore ideas of personal perspective, indifference, and our place in the wider world.

Purchase Mistral 14 during the “Progress in Beauty” exhibition (July 5 - August 4) to benefit from additional perks

  • Receive a set of limited edition Mistral notecards

  • Enjoy free shipping and delivery anywhere in the US
